When I help clients make decisions on where they need to spend their money and where to save it, I always say spend it on draperies. It is important to choose the right fabric for drapes. Nothing creates a more beautiful room than beautiful draperies.

So let's take a look at all of the different designs and ideas. If one design tickles your fancy, then print out the photo and take it to your local drapery fabric store and have their workroom make them for you. Remember, choosing your own drapery design, and picking out your fabric without a designer will save you a lot of money.

Valances

Valances are a wonderful way to add color and design to a window that you want to keep pretty simple and tailored. This is especially a good choice when you don't want to lose a lot of light or a good view from the window.

If you are looking for cheap window treatments, valances do not take as much fabric as long drapery panels, and that keeps the cost of your custom curtains very reasonable.

Remember when hanging valances to hang them at least 6" above your window if possible. This gives the illusion of a larger window.

The colors in this valance really stand out! Don't forget trim, it adds to your drapery budget, but wow what a difference!

TIP: If you are going to sew your own valance and plan on adding trim , attach the trim using hot glue. That way no stitching will show on either side of your valance.

The ruffle sewn at the top of this valance adds spectacular character! What I love about this valance is depending on the size of your window, a yard should be all you need. A yard of fabric! How great is that?

This design is a one of my favorite unique window treatment ideas, and I love the choice of drapery hardware. I used very similar hardware in my living room. I purchased my iron finials from Hobby Lobby!

A valance on a small iron rod gives a casual feel. Line your valance with a contrasting fabric to add flair. The drapery rings have a clip that attaches to your valance for quick and easy hanging.

How fun is this curtain? Looking for custom kitchen curtains? Remember, when making custom curtains, trim and contrasting fabrics are what really make window treatments stand out.

Cornice Board Valance

The use of color and fabrics is truly what makes this cornice valance so outstanding. Again, the choice of using coordinating fabrics to this curtain is what makes it so unique and interesting. If your are wanting French Country curtains for your home, Sonya's designs really mirror the French Country style.

Long Draperies

Whether you have a roman shade, or bamboo shades, having another window treatment between long draperies adds even more depth and character. Gorgeous!

Another perfect example of using several fabrics incorporated into one window design. Look at the painted drapery hardware! Who says you have to go with black, brown, or white? With one can of paint you can transform your drapery hardware!

Silk fabrics are so rich and stunning! Using a plaid fabric design gives a more casual elegance. I love two long drapery panels on each side a window framing it in simple elegance.

The topper in this treatment just makes it "pop". Using a more casual design fabric for the long drapes again gives an informal feel. Many times long draperies can look a little formal, but the choice in fabrics makes all the difference.

Take the plunge and mix and match your fabrics! Don't be afraid to ask the salesperson at the fabric store for help. They are very knowledgeable and will be more then willing to help you pull your custom curtain design together.
